November 2009 sighting statistics

This month we have encountered 7 different cetacean species (2 whale species and 5 dolphin species) during our whale watching tours. Not bad for this time of the year! Two of these species that came as an extra surprise were the fin whale and false killer whale. The rest were more common species that we regularly see here in the Azores. The species we encountered this November are listed below and sighting frequencies (days sighted of all the days we went to sea) for each species an be seen in the graph above:
  • Common dolphin (Delphinus delphis)
  • Bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus)
  • Atlantic spotted dolphin (Stenella frontalis)
  • Risso's dolphin (Grampus griseus)
  • Sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus)
  • False killer whale (Pseudorca crassidens)
  • Fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus)
