October 2009 sighting statistics

This past month we have encountered 5 different cetaceans species: our regulars, or those that are resident in the Azores (sperm whale, common dolphin, bottlenose dolphin and Risso's dolphin) and our most common summer visitor, the Atlantic spotted dolphin. The above graph shows the sighting frequency of each species for the month of October. Common names are shown below, listed in order of sighting frequency:

  • Common dolphin (Delphinus delphis)
  • Bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus)
  • Atlantic spotted dolphin (Stenella frontalis)
  • Sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus)
  • Risso's dolphin (Grampus griseus)
