The baleen whales have arrived to kick start an exciting new whale watching season for us here in the Azores!!
This morning we had at least two blue whales in the area. We cannot think of a better way to start our new season than with the worlds largest animal paying us a visit along their northward migration. Today marks the start of an exciting time for us; the time of the year when large baleen whales, such as blue whales, fin whales, sei whales and humpback whales pass through the Azores as they head up north to feed during the summer. Over the next couple of months we can expect to see many of these whales passing by, as well as sightings of our resident sperm whales.
The following photos are on one of the large adult blue whales that was in the area this morning. Not the best photos (sometimes it can be surprisingly difficult to photograph the largest animal in the world), but the best part was seeing it for ourselves.
Ofcourse we are still excited to see dolphins too and this morning we had a really good sighting of our resident bottlenose dolphins. We were lucky to see the group twice, on the way to the whales and on our way back in. Some of us also got to see a young loggerhead turtle as an added bonus.
