A year of whale watching - 2012 sighting summary

As 2012 draws to a close we are looking back on a great year of whale watching and swimming with dolphins. Despite a few storms and fewer tours than usual this year has been a very succesful year. Listed below are some of our highlights from 2012:
  • Our tour success rate this year was 98.8% (there were only 4 tours in which nothing was seen, and in this case another tour is offered free of charge).
  • 17 different whale and dolphin species were sighted this year.
  • The average number of species per tour was 2.4. The maximum was 6 species sighted in one tour.
  • Orcas (Killer whales) visited us from the end of April to the beginning of May.
  • False killer whales were seen on Christmas Day (as well as in April).
  • Record number of blue and fin whales were sighted. This year we identified 31 different blue whales, all individuals that we had not identified here before.
  • Three different beaked whale species were identified (Blainville's beaked whale, Sowerby's beaked whale and True's beaked whale)
The graph below shows the total yearly sighting frequency of all species that we sighted this year (beaked whale species are grouped together):
