Today we had some beautiful encounters with dolphins very close to shore along the south coast of São Miguel Island. We started off our morning tour with a group of bottlenose dolphins only about 20 m off the coastline, just outside of Ponta Delgada. The dolphins were diving frequently (most likely in search of food), in an area where the water was as shallow as 10 m. Further to the west we encountered a group of common dolphins, followed by another group of bottlenose dolphins just as close to shore. In the afternoon we re-sighted both species, again very close to the coastline and near Ponta Delgada. All of our encounters were really great as we observed many interesting behaviours (bowriding, mating, jumping alongside the boat and slapping the surface) and we had nice sunny weather that lit up the sea and the island.
