Today's highlight was a group of sperm whales off the south coast of São Miguel Island in the Azores. During both the morning and afternoon tours we had the opportunity to watch them. During the morning they were a little bit more difficult to see, but in the afternoon a group came together at the surface to socialise. We counted 7 large adult female sperm whales (some of them looked like full sized 12 m individuals, which is the maximum length that the females reach). From our zodiac the biologist also spotted a smaller juvenile in the group. Sunshine and dolphins also brightened our day: in the morning a group of Atlantic spotted dolphins and in the afternoon some very social bottlenose dolphins that gave our swimmers a excellent underwater viewing.
