June 2015 sighting statistics

June has been a true whale month here in São Miguel. Sperm whales, sei whales and fin whales has been around and we have seen whales on almost all our tours. We have also seen pilot whales, which is the second largest dolphin in the world. When it comes to smaller dolphins all our resident dolphins has been sighted: common dolphins, bottlenose dolphins and Risso's dolphins. The striped dolphin and the Atlantic spotted dolphin has been keeping us company too. And one encounter with beaked whales, either True's beaked whale or Gervais' beaked whales. In total 10 species of cetaceans. We have also seen plenty of loggerhead turtles, ocean sunfish, hammerhead sharks, white marlin and flying fish. When it comes to birds: Cory's shearwater, yellow-legged gull, common tern and Bulwer's petrel.
