It is listed as Endangered in the Azores, with only about 50 couples nesting only on Santa Maria, on Vila islet (however, several birds have been captured on Graciosa Island). In the past this species faced intense human pressure through hunting, destruction of its nesting habitats and predation by exotic mammals (especially cats and rats). It is a highly pelagic bird, coming to land only during the breeding season which usually lasts from May to early October. When in flight Bulwer’s petrels are silent, but when they are in their nests they emit a very characteristic call known as a "woof“. On the breeding grounds their behaviour is nocturnal and colonial. The young fledge between mid-September and early October. This species is classified as "uncommon breeder" in the Azores.
