Dolphins, dolphins and dolphins!

During the last days we have been seeing large groups of dolphins: common dolphins, Atlantic spotted dolphins, striped dolphins and bottlenose dolphins. For the whales it was more difficult...the vigias spotted sperm whales and beaked whales off the coast...but we just saw the blows from a distance and just one glimpse of the body of a whale!

A very curious sperm whale

The weather has been very strange this month of July with rain, fog, wind, waves and as a result not many animals for us to see. Then as if by magic the situation turned around. Today the morning we encountered common dolphins and striped dolphins and in the afternoon we saw Atlantic spotted dolphins and sperm whales. It was a really nice show with a very curious sperm whale (see photos below)

The whales have returned to us

After a day of only dolphins yesterday (bottlenose dolphins, Risso´s dolphins, common dolphins and Atlantic spotted dolphins) the whales returned to us today. We saw sperm whales in both the morning and afternoon and an additional sei whale in the afternoon. As usual we also saw dolphins today, a beautiful group of Atlantic spotted dolphin. Below is a dive sequence of one of the sperm whales from today (showing Santa Maria Island in the background):

For the first the sperm whale was the most sighted species along the south coast of SãoMiguel Island, Azores. The graph below shows the sighting frequency (percent of days sighted during the month) of all cetaean species sighted in June. This month we sighted 11 different species! The common names of all species are listed below (in order of sighting frequency)
