Another great day with a lot of dolphins

Today in the morning we had large groups of common dolphins and spotted dolphins. Among the common dolphins we encountered a well known dolphin - Victor, a common dolphin with a flopped dorsal fin (see photo below). In the afternoon we spotted a loggerhead turtle and while we where watching the turtle some Risso's dolphins came and played in the waves. After the Risso's dolphins we watched a lovely group of common dolphins. Photos from today:

A sei whale and a lot of dolphins

Today in the morning we had huge groups of common dolphins, spotted dolphins and Risso's dolphins. The Risso's dolphin is a very shy dolphin species but today we had them close to the boat, jumping, tail slapping , spyhopping and even bowriding. In the afternoon we saw the same 3 dolphin species, we had great swimming with the common dolphins and our whale watchers had a nice encounter with a sei whale. Photos from today:

Beaked whales and dolphins

Today we had great tours starting with a large group of Risso's dolphins, around 60-80 individuals. Later we encountered a lot of Atlantic spotted dolphins jumping and playing around the boats. In the afternoon we saw both Atlantic spotted dolphins and common dolphins and the day ended with a lucky encounter with two beaked whales. Some photos from today:

Fin whale and dolphins

In the morning we had a sighting of a fin whale passing by. The baleen whales are migratory and normally pass by Azores between April to May or the beginning of June so it is not common to see them here this time of the year. After this beautiful whale we saw common dolphins and bottlenose dolphins. Those on our zodiac boat also had an additional sighting of Atlantic spotted dolphins.

Our afternoon started off very wet with a lot of rain passing over the island. However, by the time we got offshore it had cleared up and we encountered some really acrobatic groups of Atlantic spotted dolphins and common dolphins. There were also sperm whales in the area, but unfortunately due to the rainy conditions over the island our vigias (onshore lookout men) lost sight of them. Nevertheless we had some really great moments with the dolphins.

6 species today!

Today in the morning we started with pilot whales, which we haven't seen for a while now so it was a happy sighting, and later sperm whales interacting with bottlenose dolphins and some spotted dolphins on the way back to the harbour. Our other whale watching boats also saw Risso's dophins and common dolphins. In the afternoon we had a large group of sperm whales that was very close together and very curious and they came very close to our boat checking us out. Some photos from today:

A calm and beautiful dolphin day

Today in the morning we had a calm and beautiful sea and a lot of dolphins. We encountered common dolphins, a group of three bottlenose dolphins and a big group of spotted dolphins. And on the way back to the harbour we met another group of common dolphins jumping, playing and bowriding. Some photos from the morning.
