Investigação em curso todos os dias com os cachalotes - Ongoing research everyday with sperm whales

Durante a semana passada vimos muitos cachalotes conhecidos em São Miguel que reconhecemos a partir do nosso catálogo. Hoje tanto de manhã como de tarde encontramos vários cachalotes que pertencem a um grupo que inclui os indivíduos como a "Orca" e a "Wenea". Este grupo de cachalotes também foi encontrado em outras ilhas dos Açores, já que os grupos familiares de cachalotes fêmeas com as suas crias viajam em torno da região, incluindo a Madeira e as Ilhas Canárias. A maior parte da nossa pesquisa realizada aqui na Futurismo é a foto-ID, fotografando os cachalotes que encontramos e mantendo o controle dos grupos de indivíduos que são avistados aqui em comparação com outras áreas próximas. Hoje também encontramos várias espécies de golfinhos. Na parte da manhã, vimos golfinhos roazes, golfinhos comuns, golfinhos pintados do Atlântico e os golfinhos de Risso (que estavam muito ativos na superfície e nos proporcionaram alguns saltos impressionantes). Na parte da tarde encontramos golfinhos comuns e golfinhos roazes novamente. Foi mais um grande dia de baleias e golfinhos, em São Miguel, Açores!

During the past week we have been seeing many familiar sperm whales in São Miguel that we recognise from our catalogue. In both the morning and afternoon today we encountered several sperm whales that belong to a group that include individuals such as “Orca” and “Wenea”. This group of sperm whale have also been encountered in other islands of the Azores, as the family groups of female sperm whales with their young travel around the region, including Madeira and the Canary Islands.  A major part of our research conducted here in Futurismo is photo-ID, photographing the individuals we encounter and keeping track of the groups and individuals that are sighted here in comparison to other nearby areas. Today we also encountered several dolphin species. In the morning we saw bottlenose dolphins, common dolphins, Atlantic spotted dolphins and Risso’s dolphins (who were very active at the surface and showed us some impressive jumps). In the afternoon we encountered common dolphins and bottlenose dolphins again. It has been another great day of whale and dolphin watching in São Miguel, Azores!

More familiar groups of sperm whales

Today we encountered two more familiar groups of sperm whales, both of them different groups to the one encountered yesterday. Our first fluke photograph in the morning was instantly recognisable as an individual we refer to as "Bear Paw". We also instantly recognised a sperm whale we call "Orca". This small adult female does not need to show its tail to be recognisable as she has a very distinct saddle patch in front of her dorsal fin. In afternoon we encountered a different group of sperm whales that we also recognise. One of them we know very well from the strange dorsal fin which is almost completely missing. We call this whale "Kima". In the morning we also encountered common dolphins, while in the afternoon it was both common dolphins and Atlantic spotted dolphins.

Passamos o dia de hoje com cachalotes que nós reconhecemos. Na viagem da manhã para além dos cachalotes vimos baleias-piloto, golfinho roaz e golfinhos comuns. Na parte da tarde ainda observamos os golfinhos pintados do Atlântico. Tivemos muitas caudas de cachalotes, tanto de manhã como de tarde e nós reconhecemos todos eles, pois já se encontram identificados no nosso catálogo e esta é uma parte da pesquisa que fazemos na Futurismo. Um deles é conhecido como Wenea, que foi fotografada pela primeira vez, em 2010, na ilha do Pico, e mais tarde, em 2013, aqui em São Miguel com uma cria. Um outro, conhecido apenas como Pm230, foi visto tanto de manhã como de tarde e foi fotografado pela primeira vez no ano passado, tendo sido observado, novamente com o mesmo grupo.


We spent this day with well-known sperm whales. In the morning we also saw pilot whales, bottlenose dolphins and common dolphins. In the afternoon we saw spotted dolphins. We got many fluke (tail) photos of the sperm whales from both the morning and afternoon and we recognise all of them as they are in our catalogue and this is one part of the research that we do. One of them, known as Wenea, was first photographed, in 2010, in Pico island, and later on, in 2013, here in São Miguel with a calf and then today. Another one, only known as Pm230 at the moment, was seen both in the morning and in the afternoon and we photographed it for the first time last year, and it was together with the same group as this year.

Avistamentos de cetáceos - Cetacean sightings

Os nossos maravilhosos avistamentos de cetáceos continuam durante toda esta semana. Na parte da manhã encontramos cachalotes e três espécies de golfinhos (roaz, golfinho pintado do Atlântico e golfinho comum). O nosso melhor encontro foi com cachalotes uma fêmea e uma cria que mergulharam juntos em sincronia, ambos mostrando as suas caudas. Tiramos fotos das suas caudas e depois comparamos com o nosso catálogo fotográfico e fomos capazes de ver que eram duas baleias que conhecemos muito bem: Elsemiek e Peregrine. No ano passado tivemos vários encontros com este par de cachalotes e foi a primeira vez que encontramos Peregrine como uma cria.

Na parte da tarde tivemos um passeio divertido e saltitante a bordo do nosso semi-rígido. Encontramos 3 baleias sardinheiras que estavam muito curiosas com o nosso barco. Elas aproximaram-se do nosso barco e foi possível sentir o cheiro da sua respiração. Após este maravilhoso encontro fomos observar alguns golfinhos comuns. Acabamos cercados por um grupo muito bom, composto por alguns golfinhos muito pequenos.

Our wonderful cetacean sightings are continuing throughout this week. In the morning we encountered sperm whales and three dolphin species (bottlenose dolphin, Atlantic spotted dolphin and common dolphin). By far our best sperm whale encounter was with a mother-baby pair that dived together in sync, both showing their tails. By taking photos of their tails and later comparing them to our photographic catalogue we were able to see that they were two whales we know very well: Elsemiek and Peregrine. Last year we had several encounters with this pair and it was the first time we encountered Peregrine as a young calf.

In the afternoon we had a funny and bouncy ride aboard our zodiac boat which was well worth it. We encountered 3 sei whales who were very curious towards our boat. They approached our boat so close that we could smell their stinky breath. After this wonderful close encounter we went to see some common dolphins. We ended up surrounded by a nice group that included some very small newborn babies.

7 espécies de cetáceos - 7 cetacean species

Encontramos 7 espécies diferentes de cetáceos, hoje em São Miguel. Durante o passeio da manhã encontramos as nossas 4 espécies residentes: cachalotes, golfinho roaz, golfinhos comuns e golfinhos de Risso. À tarde, encontramos uma baleia sardinheira, seguida por uma baleia comum, golfinhos pintados do Atlântico, e novamente, os cachalotes  para terminar o dia. Um pouco de paciência foi necessária com os cachalotes ao longo do dia, mas no final todos conseguiram ver a parte mais espetacular quando os cachalotes mostram a sua cauda magnífica, no início de um mergulho profundo para alimentação.

We have encountered 7 different cetacean species in São Miguel today. During the morning tour we encountered our 4 resident species: sperm whales, bottlenose dolphins, common dolphins and Risso's dolphins. In the afternoon we encountered a sei whale, followed by a fin whale, bottlenose dolphins, Atlantic spotted dolphins, and finally sperm whales again to finish the day. A bit of patience was required with the sperm whales throughout the day, but in the end everybody was able to see the most spectacular part when the sperm whales show their magnificent tail at the beginning of a deep feeding dive.

Hoje a Futurismo Azores Adventures começou a operar a partir do nosso novo centro de atividades. Estas novas instalações são nas Portas do Mar - Loja 26. O novo centro de atividades está localizado bem próximo ao nosso escritório atualmente em operação nas Portas do Mar, também próximo ao bar Baía dos Anjos. Tivemos os nossos primeiros briefings e partidas hoje pela manhã e à tarde para um dos nossos semi-rígidos. Na parte da manhã os nossos clientes voltaram muito feliz depois de encontrar quatro espécies: as falsas baleias assassinas, uma baleia comum, roazes e golfinhos comuns. Agora estamos à espera de notícias do nosso passeio à tarde que ainda está a decorrer com este lindo dia ensolarado.

Today we began operating from our new Futurismo Azores Adventures activity center. These new premises are in Portas do Mar – loja 26. The new activity center is located right next to our office currently in operation in Portas do Mar, also next to Baía dos Anjos bar. We had our first briefings and departures today in the morning and afternoon for one of our zodiac boats. In the morning our clients returned very happy after encountering 4 species: false killer whales, a fin whale, bottlenose dolphins and common dolphins. Now we are waiting for news from our afternoon tour which is currently still out there on this gorgeous sunny day.
